Zenibachi Granite PolyStone Zen garden ceremonial water basin with Kanji letters 80-2

Recommended for larger size Bonsai arrangements.

2" high x 3.75" wide.  Weight 22 ounces or 1.4lb.

Original styled water basin shaped into a "Zeni" or antique coin with square center cut out to form the basin with carved Kanji letters.  An original example of this style can be found in the famous Ryoanji temple in Kyoto and in many tea gardens in Japan.

History: The famous Zenibachi stands in the grounds of the Ryōan-ji temple in Kyoto and was donated by the feudal lord Tokugawa Mitsukuni. The Kanji written on the surface of the stone are without significance when read alone. If each is read in combination with 口 (kuchi) - the shape of the central bowl - then the characters become 吾, 唯, 足, 知 which translates literally as "I only know plenty" (吾 = ware = I, 唯 = tada = only, 足 = taru = plenty, 知 = shiru = know). The underlying meaning, variously translated as "what one has is all one needs", or "learn only to be content" reflects the basic anti-materialistic teachings of Buddhism.

6" Miyoshi Granite Poly Stone Ikekomi-gata buried post style Bonsai garden lantern 61-6

Recommended for medium to large size Bonsai garden arrangements, scale Japanese tea gardens, Buddhist temple, and Shinto shrine dioramas, Asian displays, aquariums, indoor decorations, etc.

6" high. Weight 9.5 ounces.

The Miyoshi is placed in an entry way or along a garden path. The name of the originator "Miyoshi" is carved in the face of this traditional granite lantern.  This is a classic ikekomi-gata (buried-post) style Japanese stone lantern.  The lantern has two main window openings, one on the front and one in the back. Small moon shaped windows on the other two sides.  The Miyoshi granite lantern looks absolutely stunning when placed in an entry way or along a garden path.

Architecture

Due to the lack of a pedestal the shaft is sunk directly into the ground hiding the unfinished portion of the basin.  In most cases they have square or round shaft. They are often sited near to a Tsukubai, a water basin. As there is only a small hole required to install the lantern minimal damages to already existing plants and roots will occur.

History

Ikekomi-Gata (buried lantern) also called ikekomi-doro (planted lanterns) were first produced in Japan during the Momoyama Period (1568-1615). Designed specifically for the roji (gardens developed in conjunction with the tea ceremony) by the ancient tea masters, they are believed to be among the oldest type of garden lanterns.
