Infantry is the oldest branch of the army and for almost the entire history of mankind has been the main branch of the ground forces. Even the appearance in ancient times on the battlefields of cavalry, chariots, and war elephants did not greatly affect this. With the advent of a more universal horseman cavalry, the infantry somewhat loses its significance, but not by much, and after the “hoplite revolution” in ancient Greece, the linear formation of well-trained infantry (phalanx) and heavy weapons made infantry for long the main part of the army. The advantage of heavily armed infantry remained until the 1st-3rd centuries AD. e. and in the army of Ancient Rome, it was leveled mainly by the barbarization of the army. The heavy or linear infantry of antiquity was armed with edged weapons: spears, darts, sometimes swords, and wore armor that effectively protected from most of the striking elements of its time. Light infantry and cavalry were mainly intended for auxiliary operations and were armed with spears, bows and other cold weapons, their armor could be present or absent.
