Durer Engraving “Five Lansquenets" from Famous 1918 German Book of Reproduction

This is a 100-year-old reproduction of an engraving by Albrecht Durer. the great German Renaissance artist.

The print is titled, “Five Lansquenets and an Oriental on Horseback.” It dates from 1495. It is Bartsch 88, its reference in the most important catalogue raisonné of Durer’s work.

A lansquenet was a mercenary foot soldier.

The dimensions of the printed area are: height, 5⅛ inches; width, 5¾ inches. The actual paper on which it is printed is slightly larger so the print can easily be matted and framed, if that is desired.

A large folio of very good reproductions of the copperplate prints of  Durer was produced in Munich in 1918 by Jaro Springer and published by the famous firm of Holbein-Verlag.

The folio measured 17 inches high by 12½ inches wide.

The reproductions of the various prints were tipped in, glued onto the pages with a line of adhesive across the top. In some instances there is a bit of waviness in that area which can be seen in the scans. This could be corrected by loosening the glue and reattaching the print.

The print being offered here is from that volume, a copy of which I have owned for about 50 years.
