Nitinol 2-way Memory Spring

Nitinol pre-trained 2-way memory helical/coil spring has the special feature of reacting to both heating and cooling. This particular version of the spring will contract on its own when cooled, and expand with force when heated. The springs come in 60mm lengths but we cut them down to up to 15mm to make them more affordable. The length is approximate, the spring may be 1 or 2 millimeters shorter or longer depending on your luck and the mood of the person putting your order together. :) just kidding we always do the best we can.

Spring wire is 0.7mm and the diameter of the actual spring winding is 9mm. Yes, it provides force in both direction, the highly sought-after and elusive 2-way memory function. The force provided at cooling is about half of the force provided when heated. The spring is fully contracted at room temperature, but cooling it down to a colder temperature helps make the effect more pronounced.

While the spring will provide force both in contraction please note that due to the nature of nitinol, there is substantially more force in the austenite phase (when the spring is heated).

Unlike linear actuators, spring design only uses nitinol's properties along the skin of the material. Do not expect excessive forces from these springs, however, they can find novel uses in actuators or devices that only require light work. One of these springs can perform up to 60 grams of work on contraction and 20 grams on expansion.
