About European (Common) Centaury Herb (Centuarium Erythrae):

The European centaury is used as a medical herb in many parts of Europe. 

One of the classic “bitter herbs”, Centaury is a relative of the gentians and grows abundantly in the wild. It has a long history of traditional use as a digestive tonic and was also used to treat fevers – hence the name “feverwort”.

It has been extensively used in teas, tonics, digestive bitters and herbal liqueurs. Centaury was also a popular ingredient in shampoo, gently cleansing to the hair and said to enhance the natural radiance of white and platinum blonde hair.

The English botanist and herbalist, Culpeper, described Centaury as "very wholesome, but not very toothsome", alluding to its extreme bitterness. The German herbalist Father Sebastian Kneipp recommended Centaury for melancholy and for calming the nerves. It was also an ingredient of "Portland Powder", a treatment for gout.

Chemical composition of European Centaury: Bitter glucosides-genciopicrin (stimulates the activity of bile and liver); genicianin (has anthelmintic properties), erythramine, flavonoids, nicotinic acid, amarogenin, essential oil, vitamin C.

Externally: for slowly healing wounds, hair loss, to lubricate purulent wounds and boils.

What does Centaury Herb Tea taste like?

Centaury is one of the classic bitters, very straightforward in its bitterness. Taste is very bitter, clear, cold, and cutting.

How to use/consume loose dried Centaury Herb?

Tea:
1-2 teaspoons of Centaury Herb per cup of boiling water and steep for 3-10 minutes depending on taste. Then strain and serve.

Infusion:
1 tablespoon of herb is poured 400 ml of boiling water, strain. 3 cups of tea a day before meals.

Infusion 2:
1 tsp. herb per 200 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes, which is drunk three times, 1/2 hour before meals.

Externally Infused Olive Oil:
Mixed with olive oil (1:20) for 20 days.

Externally Compresses:
1 tsp. herb per 200 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes.

> Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
> Not recommended for children under 12 years.
> Not recommended for persons with intolerance to herbal preparations.
> May cause mild abdominal discomfort and cramps.
> Contraindicated in persons with peptic ulcer of the stomach and intestines.
