Description

A Delightful Antique Indian Miniature Dowry Chest.
 Early C.

A charming hand painted Indian dowry chest from  the early part of the 20th C.
A seven drawered hand painted miniature Indian dowry chest.  Each facing of this chest is coffered into nine panels.  The chest has a primose yellow ground with each panel showing flowers, animals and birds.  The painting is highlighted in gold gilt and black.  The original brass hasp drops down from the top to fasten over its brass staple.  This is locked by a little brass padlock, obviously not original, but allows the contents to be hidden from prying eyes.  On release the front panel of the chest drops down.  Enclosed are nine miniature drawer faces painted in a similar manner.  Each has a little brass split ring pull.  The upper drawer has replacement brass split rings ie not original.  The top three drawers open as one providing one larger drawer of full cabinet size.  The central two drawers have a 'secret' drawer of sorts as they open together and are subdivided by the base of the upper drawer that slides out.

Dimensions: The chest measures 26cm x 17cm x 17cm.

Weight:  2327g's.

Condition: In good used antique condition. The box is clean with the paint being very largely intact.  There are marks and some chips to the paint work from age and use.  At some point some retouching has been made to the gold around the hasp.  The wood is intact with no losses or cracks other than two cracks on the drop down flap as shown in the images.  This does not affect the function of the flap in any way.  As previously stated the lock and three of the brass split rings are not original.  The lock comes with two tiny keys.  All drawers slide out and in easily and the interior is clean.   There are age and use related surface marks to the wood.  Please be aware that the production methods of this style of box are somewhat more rough than say that of a writing slope from the same period and this is reflected in the overall finish and appearance.  We encourage potential buyers to make use of the 24 images to satisfy themselves of condition and encourage any enquiries.

A charming and unusual antique Indian miniature chest that displays beautifully and remains fully functional.

We actively encourage buyers to review the images that do constitute part of the description.  As with many vintage/antique items the chest does have minor surface marks and wear from past use and age.
