Title of the map:

"CARTE PARTICULIERE DE L'ENTREE DE CANTON"

Large antique copper engraved sea chart of the entrance of the city of Canton (China) by Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon D'ANVILLE (1697-1782)

Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville spent the whole of his life in the study of geography and became its foremost exponent in Europe. His aim was reform, the rejection of plagiarism, critical examination of authorities, a basis of astronomical observation and the deletion of unverified material. Thus his maps show large blank spaces that had previously been filled in by imagination and hearsay. He taught geography to the Duc d'Orléans and his son, and was renowned for his taste, discernment and erudition. His attention to detail was exemplary, his maps having a great dedicacy of engraving is most pleasing to the eye. He became Geographe ordinaire du Roy when only 22 years old, a member of the Academie des Sciences in 1773 and finally Premier géographe du Roi in 1779. He produced 212 maps and 78 memoirs, and amassed a personnal map collection of great value which was acquired by Louis XVI in 1779 and now reposes in the Bibliotheque Nationale.

D'Anville dominated the second half of the 18th century as De L'Isle had the first and kept France in the forefront of geographical advance. His work was admired and largely copied in other lands.
