Ludwig: The scene is Chicago, the yearis 1909. Two sons of German immigrants, William F. and Theobald Ludwig, foundedthe company originally called Ludwig & Ludwig. William was a professionaldrummer playing gigs for circuses and vaudeville shows, but as any musicianknows — gigs can be far and few between. To fill the gaps, the two started up adrum shop in Chicago. Their first act of business was the design andmanufacture of a functional bass drum pedal. The company continued to add newproducts to their catalog like snare drums and timpani. By 1923, the company was the largest drummanufacturer in the world. In 1930–1939, Ludwig sold the company to CG Conn.Eventually, William F. Ludwig decided to leave Conn and start a company of hisown. He was able to get the Ludwig name back, and the brand was just called“Ludwig” again. Fast forward to 1964 when a plucky little band from across thepond started using Ludwig drums during their historic TV debut on the EdSullivan Show. Ringo Starr displayed the Ludwig logo on his bass drum, andthat’s when the brand, much like the Beatles, became a sensation.
