Pilgrim at Emmaus (Die Pilger von Emaus) / Fragment
copperplate engraving
by Claude Ferdinand Gaillard (after Rembrandt)
(1887)

Claude Ferdinand Gaillard (1834-1887) was arguably the greatest reproductive engraver of the 19th century, famous for his remarkably fine line work. Here he takes up Rembrandt's painting the Pilgrims at Emmaus from 1648. He also produced a full-scale engraving of the painting, but this version is identified as a "fragment" which excludes the figure of Christ.
