Very unusual copper engraved Map of West and Central Africa, by Olfert DAPPER (1636-1689). 

The map extends from the southern Sahara desert to Angola, and from the center of the continent to the Pacific. The supposed lake Aquilunda is depicted here, in Angola.

On the map, we can see animals, elephants, lions, ostriches etc..

A decorative title cartouche with angels, animals, and Poseidon. 


In the sea, some ships appears, which are going to buy slaves in Africa. 

This map has been made during the period of slavery of the Portuguese who came to buy slaves in Africa. 




Dapper was a Dutch physician and writer. He wrote books of history and geography. 

His famous book is "Description de l'Afrique", one of the most important work about Africa in XVIIe century.
