Toyota Cup 1988
Match Summary
The 1988 Toyota Cup Final, which pitted Nacional against a PSV Eindhoven side that included Ronald Koeman and Romario, was to surpass the club's previous experiences in the competition.

After taking the lead in the7 th minute from a header by Santiago Ostolaza following a poor clearance by Hans van Breukelen, the Uruguyans dictated the whole of the first half.

After the break, PSV equalised through Romario (75 th) and the game went into extra-time. The Dutch took the lead ten minutes from the end of extra-time from a Koeman penalty, but Nacional refused to yield. Ostalaza met Yubert Lemos's well-taken corner to head home powerfully with just seconds remaining on the clock.

Jorge Sere, the goalkeeper, proved to be the hero in the extended penalty shoot-out, saving four Dutch penalties and enabling Nacional to triumph for the third time in three finals.

Key players
Santiago Ostalaza, an extremely hardworking attack-minded midfielder, was Nacional's star player in the 1988 Toyota Cup in which he scored twice against PSV Eindhoven, the second from a powerful header in the dying seconds of extra-time.

He then coolly converted his penalty at the end of the prolonged penalty shout-out to secure Nacional's third Toyota Cup. Born in Dolores in 1962 into a football-obsessed family (his father was a goalkeeper), the "Basque" - as he was nicknamed - played for many clubs, including Bella Vista (1980-1985), Nacional de Montevideo (1986-1988), Cruz Azul (1989-1992), Queretano (1992), Kioto Purple (1994), Olimpia (1995/99), before ending his career back in Uruguay in 2000 with Wanderers de Montevideo.

He then moved into coaching with River Plate, before moving on to Deportivo Maldonado, Wanderers, Zacatecas (Mexico), and Nacional who sacked him in July 2004 following a defeat against their arch-rivals Peñarol. The world of football has surely not seen the last of him ...

Coach
After leading Nacional to victory in the 1988 Toyota Cup, Roberto Fleitas was named South American coach of the year. He had already presided over Uruguay's victory in the 1987 Copa America and subsequently went on to coach several clubs in Argentina.
