THE WRITER:

BERNT ENGELMANN

Bernt Engelmann (born January 20, 1921 in Berlin ; † April 14, 1994 in Munich ) was a German writer and journalist . With over 15 million printed books, he is considered one of the most successful "factual and investigative authors" in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Engelmann is a great-grandson of the publisher Leopold Ullstein and spent his childhood in his hometown Berlin. At the age of eleven, his family moved to Düsseldorf , where he graduated from the Lessing Oberschule in 1938 Immediately afterwards he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and then into the Air Force . Apparently due to an injury or wound he had suffered while on duty, he left the Wehrmacht and began studying in 1942. He also earned his living as a translator and editor .

Towards the end of the National Socialist dictatorship , Engelmann joined a resistance group , was arrested twice by the Gestapo and in 1944 imprisoned in the Flossenbürg , Hersbruck and Dachau concentration camps for “favoring Jews” .

After the Second World War , Engelmann began studying journalism . During this time he wrote for union newspapers . He then worked as a reporter and editor, initially for Spiegel and later for the NDR magazine Panorama . From 1962 he became increasingly active as a publicist and published one or two non-fiction books a year until his death in 1994. From 1977 to November 1983 he was chairman of the Association of German Writers (VS) in the IG Druck und Papier . During this time he sat down free for social securityJournalists and writers . Artists' social insurance goes back to his initiative Engelmann was also a member of the SPD , IG Metall and from 1972 to 1984 a member of the executive committee of the West German PEN center.

Because of his contacts as a VS functionary to the writers' association of the GDR he was z. T. controversial. In 1984 he was awarded the Heinrich Heine Prize from the Ministry of Culture of the GDR .

Engelmann last lived in Rottach-Egern in the Bavarian Prealps . He is buried there too.
