About Elecampane/Oman Roots (Inula Helenium):

The species name (second of the latin binomial) comes from ancient Greek Myth relating to a tale of how this plant sprouted up from the tear’s cast by Helen of Troy upon her abduction from Sparta by Paris.

Elecampane is indigenous to southern and eastern Europe. The root and sometimes the rhizomes from two- to three-year-old elecampane plants are used in herbal medicine. 

One of the primary constituents of the root is a starch known as Inulin. Among the many chemical compounds in this plant, inulin supports immune function and comprises up to 45% of the weight of the root. Elecampane is the richest source of inulin!

What does Elecampane Root Tea taste like?

Strong, imparts a bitter, spicy and warming flavor all at once.

How to use/consume Dried Elecampane Roots?

Tea/Infusion/Decotion: 
One tablespoon is boiled in 400 ml. water until the water becomes half. After cooling, strain and drink 3-4 times a day. Add honey or any natural sweetener to taste.

Elecampane Tincture:
Place dried elecampane roots in a glass jar, add sufficient alcohol (38% vodka or higher) to completely cover the herb, cap with a tight fitting lid, put the jar in a dark place at room temperature, and shake at least once daily.
After 2 to 3 weeks, strain the contents using a fine sieve or muslin cloth. Store in a labelled, amber glass bottle away from light, heat and children.
Only small amounts of tincture are needed at regular intervals throughout the day. For adults and children over 12 years old one teaspoon can be taken in warm water 3-6 times daily. For children 6-12 years use half a teaspoon.

Elecampane Infused Honey:
Fill a small glass jar 1/3 of the way full with cut, dried elecampane root. Cover completely with raw, local honey. Stir as best you can.
Cap with an air-tight lid, steep together for 2-4 weeks, flip the jar upside down every so often.
To strain out the herb you may need to gently (very gently!) heat the honey in a warm water bath, this will loosen up the honey and allow the root to be strained out more easily. 
Use this honey on its own or mixed into a hot cup of tea to help with coughs, colds and stuck congestion.

Inhalation:
Boil elecampane roots and inhale steam. This will also effect the lungs and remove excess phlegm from the lungs.

Note:  Avoid elecampane during pregnancy and nursing/breastfeeding.
