There might be a whole in the plates that is for using the plate as a key chain if you use the holder at home you can just stick the keys on the holder etc.

The metal plate attaches to the back of your phone and work best if stick outside the case  or in the back of your case(case thickness can make the connection weak), this will then allow you to attach to a magnetic holder - pleased see pictures for example.
