Historical reference

Austria-Hungary entered World War I on July 28, 1914, exactly one month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo by the Bosnian Serb Gavrila Princip, an 18-year-old student and member of the nationalist organization Mlada Bosna.

The entry into the war was preceded by the presentation of an ultimatum to Serbia by Austria-Hungary and the beginning of general mobilization. After being drawn into the armed conflict of Serbia, Austria-Hungary declares war on the Russian Empire and Belgium, Great Britain and France enter the war on the side of Russia.

In 1914, contrary to the previously developed strategic plans, the Austro-Hungarian armed forces had to immediately wage a full-scale war on two fronts - Serbian and Eastern, against Russia. The unexpected activity of the Russian armies, which literally from the first weeks of the war created a threat to the borders of Galicia and Hungary, forced the high command to hastily withdraw twelve divisions from the Serbian front and transfer them to Galicia. A lightning defeat of the Serbian enemy did not work out.

In 1915, a fierce battle was fought on the Eastern Front between Russian and Austro-Hungarian troops in the Carpathians. In the same year, Austro-German troops break through the Russian front in Galicia.

On May 23, 1915, Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary, and at the same time Italian troops are trying to capture the bridgeheads held by the Austrians on the Isonzo.

In the fall of 1915, Austria-Hungary, with the help of Germany and Bulgaria, which entered the war on their side, managed to break through the Serbian front and reach the Greek border, where the Thessaloniki Front was formed.

On June 4, 1916, the Brusilov breakthrough was carried out. Russian armies break through the Austrian-Hungarian defenses in the south of the Pripyat swamps. The fighting lasted until 10 August.

On August 27, 1916, Romania declares war on Austria-Hungary. Romanian troops go on the offensive in Transylvania. The combined forces of the Central Powers (Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire) conduct a successful counteroffensive against the Romanian army.

The Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph died on November 21, 1916. His great-nephew Karl-Franz-Joseph became the new emperor under the name of Charles I.

In 1917, the USA, Greece and China declare war on Austria-Hungary. At the same time, the battle of Caporetto begins on the Italian front. Troops of Austria-Hungary and Germany manage to break through the front line. Italian units create a new line of defense along the Piave River.

On December 9, 1917, negotiations on an armistice between Russia and Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire opened in Brest-Litovsk. Three months later, the Brest-Litovsk Peace Treaty was signed.

In April 1918, a conference of representatives of the Czechoslovak, Romanian, Yugoslavian and Polish territories that were part of Austria-Hungary began work in Rome.

Six months later, a revolution took place in Austria and the subsequent disintegration of Austria-Hungary.
