LUBRICATION SERVICE INFORMATION

Figures and numerals printed in italics and enclosed in parentheais, as (D-1), refer to illun-

trations and descriptions appearing on the Mobilubrication Dise Chart which are applicable

to 1959 construction.

FRONT SUSPENSION - Movement of each lower ontrol arm is controlled by u torsion bar, rather than a coll spring. The

torsion bar is hex-shaped at each end. The front end is anchored in the lower control arm while the rear end is anchored in

the frame side rail. Movement of the lower control arm tends to twist the torsion bar. Front car height can be changed by

adjusting, twisting, the torsion bar at its rear end. The steering knuckle is mounted on ball joints in the upper and lower con-

trol arma and are the only points in the front suspension requiring lubrication, a total of four points.

TRANSMISSION (3 SPEED CONVENTIONAL (D-1) - Standard on Coronet 6, V8. Check lubricant level every 1000 miles. Add

lubricant as required. Drain and refill every 10,000 miles. Never steam clean or use kerosine or solvents to flush housing.

Filler Opening and Level Gauge: Plug in right side of housing.

Drain: Plug on right side of housing, near bottom.

POWERFLITE TRANSMISSION (D-5) - Standard on Royal V8. Optional on Coronet 6, Coronet V8. TORQUEFLITE

TRANSMISSION (D-5) Standard on Custom Royal, D500. Optional on other V8's. Check fluid level every 1000 miles. To make

this check, apply the hand brake and push the "N" (Neutral) button. Idle the engine for a few minutes and then push selector

buttons through all rangee and back to "N" position. Dipstick and filler hole on right side are reached from under hood.

Remove all dirt from around dipstick. With engine still idling, remo ve dipstick. When engine and transmission are not, im

mediately after the car has been driven for several miles, the fluid level nhould be between the "FULL" mark and the "ADD

ONE PINT" mark. With the transmission cold, below 100°F.. fluid should be between the "ADD ONE PINT" mark and a point

1/2" below. Maintain level with Mobilfluid 200.

Drain transmission every 20,000 miles or as often as 10.000 miles when the car is driven under any of the following condi-

tions: Police car or taxicab operation; Frequent towing of trailers; Frequent heavy traffic in hot weather; Continuous opera-

tion at higher than normal loading. See Mobilubrication Bulletin "Correct Lubrication of Automatic and Semi-Automatic

Transmissions" for complete and approved instructions.

REAR AXLE: (D-6) (Hypoid Gears) - Clean dirt from around filler hole, remove filler plug and check lubricant level every

1000 miles. Add lubricant as required to maintain level between bottom of filler plug and 1/2" below. Drain and refill at

least every 10,000 miles. Never steam clean nor use kerosine or solvents to flush housing. "Sure-Grip" limited slip differ-

ential optional and can be identified by letter "S stamped directly after the stamped ratio on the lower side of the carrier

case. After draining, refill with special lubricant. Use Mobilube GX90 for topping-up.

Filler Opening and Level Gauge: Right side of drive pinion carrier.

Drain: Drain plug in bottom of housing.

POWER STEERING (K-3) Constant Control optional. Check oil level in reservoir at rear or generator every 1000 miles. Be-

fore removing the reservoir cover to check the level, wipe the outside of the cover and housing so that no dirt can fall into the

reservoir. Remove thumb nut, vent washer and cover, but do not remove or disturb the filter element under any circumstances.

The filter should be completely submerged. Maintain fluid level with Mobilfluid 200. Replace cover. Fluid from reservoir also

lubricates steering gear.

MANIFOLD HEAT CONTROL: Place a few drops of graphited kerosine on each end of shaft every 1,000 miles, when exhaust

manifold is cool, to keep shaft free. If shaft become s frozen, free it by tapping each end of the shaft lightly with a hammer.

Work valve back and forth a few times.

SPEEDOMETER: Every 5000 miles remove speedome ter and bezel assembly from passenger side of instrument panel. Un-

screw oil tubes and apply Mobiloil Arctic to wicks until they are saturated.

HANDBRAKE AND GEARSHIFT LINKAGE: Apply Mobiloil Arctic every 1000 miles.

OIL FILTER: (K-1) Coronet 6 - By-pass type. Coronet V8 - Shunt type. Filter element should be replaced every 5000 miles

or more often in dusty territories and under cold weather operation. Royal, Custom Royal, D500 – Screw on type, full flow

filter. Replace complete filter every 5000 miles.

AIR CLEANER: (K-2) Dry type cleaner is standard. Remove the filter element, and tap gently on bench to dislodge dust and

foreign matter every 1000 miles or more frequently under severe dust conditions. Install a new element every 10,000 miles.

CRANKCASE VENTILATOR AIR CLEANERS: In oil filter pipe cap on all models. Wash element in Sovasol No. 5 and dry

thoroughly, every 1000 miles or more frequently under severe dust conditions. Oil element with Mobiloil AF. Allow excess

oil to drain from element before replacing it.

AIR SUSPENSION: Constant Level Torsionaire optional at rear. The two cylinder compressor is lubricated with engine oil

from the crankcase. Every 1,000 miles, depress the valve stem in bottom of reservoir to drain moisture. The reservoir is

mounted in a well under the right front fender, ahead of the wheel.
