Azem Shkreli u lind më 1938 në Rugovë të Pejës. Shkollën fillore e kreu në vendlindje, ndërsa në Prishtinë shkollën e mesme, për të vazhduar Fakultetin Filozofik, degën e gjuhës dhe letërsisë shqipe. Për shumë vjet ai ka qenë kryetar i Shoqatës së Shkrimtarëve të Kosovës, drejtor i Teatrit në Prishtinë dhe themelues e drejtor i Kosova Filmit. Vdiq në pranverën e vitit 1997.
Ka botuar këto vepra në poezi “Bulzat” (1960), “Engjujt e rrugëve” (1963), “E di një fjalë prej guri” (1969), “Pagëzimi i fjalës” (1981), “Nata e papagajve” (1990), “Lirikë me shi” (1996). Në prozë: “Karvani i bardhë” (1961), “Sytë e Evës” (1975), “Muri i përfundi shqipeve”, “Shtatë nga ata”, si dhe dramat: “Fosilet” (1968), “Varri i qyqes” (1983), etj. Poezitë e tij janë përkthyer në shumë gjuhë të huaja. Shfaqja e Azem Shkrelit si poet, përpos që përputhej me ardhjen dhe talentin e tij të fuqishëm, shënonte njëkohësisht kthesën e parë drejt hapjes dhe modernizimit të poezisë shqipe të pasluftës. Shkreli u ngjit natyrshëm në kulmet e poezisë së sotme shqiptare dhe këtë vend ai e konsolidoi dhe e përforcoi nga njëra vepër poetike në tjetrën.
