The Marder manned torpedo complex is a man-controlled transporter for covert delivery and launch of torpedoes, developed for the Kriegsmarine on the basis of the Neger torpedo complex.
In July 1944, shortly after the first two combat operations, which revealed significant shortcomings of the "Neger" complex, the German industry began to supply the "K" compound with a more advanced model "Marder". In total, about 300 units of the "Marder" complex were produced.
The design consisted of two 533-mm torpedoes - an elongated carrier torpedo and a standard combat torpedo suspended under it on yokes. The carrier had a driver's cab protected by a cap at the head.
In the bow of the transport torpedo, the designers installed a 30-liter ballast capacity. After filling it with seawater, the Kunitsa acquired neutral buoyancy and could dive to a depth of 10 meters. Thus, it was fundamentally different from the "Neger" complex and, in fact, was a midget submarine.
The transport torpedo of the "Marder" type complex had a length of 8.3 m (65 cm was added). Its weight increased by 500 kg, as a result of which the total mass of the complex reached 3.5 tons. The cruising range with a combat torpedo was 35 miles in a 4-knot course. Without a combat torpedo, the transporter could travel 50 miles at a speed of 6 knots.
To launch the torpedo, it was necessary to surface, the driver established visual contact with the target and oriented the nose of the vehicle towards it. For more accurate aiming, a sighting device was mounted on the inside of the cockpit cover.
