In 1943. Underwater weapons specialist Lieutenant Spachman developed the concept of an underwater submarine hunter (U-Bootjaeger).
As part of this concept, the ultra-small submarine Schwertwal (Killer Whale) was developed. Professor G. Walter and engineer G. Schade worked on the project, who adapted Walter's engine to the submarine design.
The boat had a streamlined shape, outwardly resembling a thick torpedo - to achieve the most optimal hull contours, the boat model was studied in the wind tunnel of the Aviation Institute in Braunschweig, and then tested in the hydrodynamic channel of one of the Hamburg shipbuilding institutes. The Walter turbine developed a power of 800 hp, which allowed the boat to reach a speed of 30 knots on the surface and 32 knots underwater. Thus, Schwertwal significantly outnumbered enemy submarines in speed. A mixture of naphthalene (1000 kg) and perhydrol (100 kg) was used as fuel.
The submarine received a significant number of fundamentally new technical devices. In particular: ELAC underwater orientation equipment, gyrocompass, autopilot, new radio station, active and passive hydroacoustic search equipment. The boat's crew consisted of two submariners. The armament was to consist of two of the latest K-Butt torpedoes, but the standard G7E could also be used.
The prototype of the Schwertwal submarine was sunk on 04/30/45. in Lake Rlöner, near the Walter-Werke plant in Kiel-Tannenberg. In July 1945. the British raised an underwater vehicle from the bottom of the lake. After studying Walter's engine, the submarine was destroyed. The concept of an underwater submarine hunter did not interest the British navy.
