Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart (1837-1880), "Malle Babbe", etching on chin colle after painting by Franz Halls (1582-1666); printed by Francois Lienard (1827-1886); publ. P&D Colnaghi in "Etchings of Pictures in the Metropolitan Museum of New York; London, 1871.  This image is Plate 1 in that folio set of etchings.(see pic of cover page). Sheet 11 x 8 3/4", chin colle 7 11/16 x 5 5/8", plate 6 x 4 3/4". Plate in excellent condition, image well inked and bright; a slight bit of paper loss right margin of chin colle sheet, well outside image plate; faint toning around margin of chine colle.  Laid paper sheet trimmed, very fine condition.

The production of this folio by the Met was at the highest level - Lienard was printer for the prestigious French journal L'Arte;  Colnaghi was a renowned publisher of art works in 19th C London; Beraldi (vol8, p 215) considered the etchings by Jacquemart in this folio "generally remarkable".

Malle Babbe  (Crazy Babbe) is one of Hal's most revered paintings, and has been copied often (even by gifted forger Hans van Meegeren). Ironically, the painting Jacquemart used for his etching, hanging at the MET, was later found to not be by Hals, but a student or close collaborator. The original Hals painting hangs at the Gemalegalerie in Berlin.  The folio title used was "Hille Babbe - "La Sorciere" (The Sorceress) a misreading of the inscription on the back of the painting.  This explains why Jacquemart's etching differs from other prints of the painting (done by Flameng, Coclers, Pascal and others), in that Babbe faces to her right, and the owl (signifying drunkeness) is on her right shoulder, and she is not holding a tankard of ale (see pics of both paintings).  It was also later discovered that Babbe was a real person who resided in a home for the mentally deficient/indigent/alcoholic called Het Dolbuys, and that Hals was likely aware of her as his son resided in that institution at one time.

This print and the entire folio is held by the Met.  The British Museum holds 27 etchings by Jacquemart  printed by Lienard.   I have not found another copy of this etching available online.
