Large Antique Lead Octagonal Clock Face with Hands

These impressive lead gilded clock faces came from Knole Hall, Knole Hall has evolved over 600 years into a house with a supposed 365 rooms and 52 staircases. It has 7 courtyards and is built from Kentish ragstone and is the largest country house in England.

Knole Hall has been going under some major repairs and investment and we had the opportunity to purchase 2 of the 4 lead clock faces. The other 2 are remaining at Knole Hall.

The clock tower was previously housed over the Great Hall and moved to its present position in 1744.

The lead clock faces have gone through several phases in their lifetime.

On the two that they have kept - paint research was commissioned in order to determine the extent and character of the current paint scheme. Analysis indicates that the painted and gilded clock face retains only its existing decoration over a lead base.

The way in which the lead is joined suggests a pre-war date, somewhere during the 1930s.

They each way approximately 213kg.

The lead clock faces measure: 64 ½" Wide x 3" Thick.

These are lead back, front and sides - completely sealed - over a wooden frame.

All measurements are approximate.
