The author's name appears to be a pseudonym. The dedication to "Louisa May Alcott", and the author's introduction might indicate that this novel was composed by a woman: "I did not intend to write a preface, because a preface is so seldom read; but a friend said to me: 'Are you not extremely anxious to know what people will say about you [sic] book? I should think you would so dread the criticisms upon it, especially those of your friends.' I replied that I had not allowed myself to think of that, and closed the conversation; mentally resolved not to talk much with her about my book. When 'Josiah Allen' said to his wife, in regard to her literary effort, 'Samantha, who will read it when its rote?' she replied that she had put her 'shoulder-blade to the wheel,' and would not turn back."
