First American edition, from the second London edition. Of Gross Clinic fame by Thomas Eakins in 1875, Samuel D. Gross was an American academic trauma surgeon. A bronze statue of him was cast by Alexander Stirling Calder and erected at the National Mall, but moe in 1970 to Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Eakins’ portrait of him hangs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He established himself as one of the most capable surgeons in America and the originator of abdominal surgery, as well as the first ovariotomost.
