This Is A Special Caution regarding trading computers with CPUs utilizing Hyper-threading being utterly misrepresented recently by some used computer vendors on Ebay who are marketing older and very inexpensive simple legacy multi-monitor office computer systems, and presenting these systems with utterly misleading hype in both Title and Descriptions as "trading computers" ... perhaps to catch a 'trader's premium' on their otherwise noncompetitive computer/server inventories... 

An old legacy $12 Intel Xeon 5080 Dual Core Processor is not a 4-Core Processor.  2x Xeon 5080 in a system IS NOT  an '8 processor' system.  It is a 2 processor system with 4 physical cores total.  It is not even a true 'Quad Core' system (a system actually requiring 4 true physical cores within one processor!). 

Additional utterly misleading examples... a matching pair of $9.25 Xeon 5570 processors in a system IS NOT a '16 processors' system.'  A single hexa core Xeon X5680 in a system IS NOT a 'twelve processors' system.  A single $22 Xeon 5590 processor in a system IS NOT an '8 processor' system.  And an old Dual Dual Core 5160 system (which PassMarks below a true Quad Core Q9550 system) is not a Quad Core system (requiring 4 cores in one processor)! Do not be mislead and fooled by utter misrepresentations in Titles and Descriptions...

I have two processors IN ONE!” this is not the case. What HT actually is, technology-wise, is a duplication on certain sections of the processor that handle the state of threads. It does not actually duplicate the main resources on the processor. This allows the operating system to schedule two threads at the same time. A thread is basically an instruction that is given to the CPU and waits for a result."

(Misleading and irrelevant 'multi-thousand MB' quotes of 'active memory or 'video memory' in a GPU COMPLEX lacking the DEDICATED MEMORY needed to support high volumes of streaming and compiling real-time market data across many simple office monitors throughout the course of the trading day without incurring significant financial market 'data drag' also instrumentally and effectively undermine the active advanced professional financial position manager's and serious daytrader's potential skills and efforts!)

***Also, don't be fooled by simple used computer vendors that would also try to feature old 3.0gb/sec SAS HDD's over newer SATA HDD's...

(4)  AND ASK THE VENDOR FOR THEIR SYSTEM'S GPU COMPLEX'S ACTUAL MICROSOFT WINDOWS EXPERIENCE INDEX (WEI) "GRAPHICS" COMPONENT AND "GAMING GRAPHICS" COMPONENT, AND "PRIMARY DRIVE" COMPONENT SUBSCORES (NOT JUST PROCESSOR AND RAM MEMORY COMPONENT) WEI SUBSCORES!"

IN SUMMARY...

 

1.  Avoid hyped Dual and Dual Dual Core Processor equipped systems altogether.  

2.  You will likely want a CPU Complex which includes a genuine Intel Xeon Hexa Core Processor (six true physical cores), or even better, a 2x Quad Core Complex (a Dual Quad Core Complex, with four true physical cores in both processors, for a total of eight true physical cores in the complex) operating within your system (eg., dual set of Intel Xeon X5300 series, E5400 series, X5500 series, or X5600 series processors with two of these intel xeon quad core processors operating together within your CPU Complex).  And, at the very least, you will want an "extreme" 12MB cache Intel Quad Core Processor - -  such as the Q9550 or above; and, even better, a genuine yet rare single "Intel Extreme" QX9650 processor. 

3.  Avoid less than DDR3 graphics cards used in a system's GPU Complex.  Especially cards with extremely low Dedicated Memory per card (256mb, 128mb, etc.)!  A powerful DDR3-DDR5 GPU Complex with 1.5GB or more of Dedicated Memory at minimum should be sought. (And as earlier mention, not one with thousands of MB of irrelevant 'active' or 'graphics' memory, etc.) 

4.  Avoid 3.0gb/sec SSD primary system drives (especiailly ones called 'ultra' while compared only to HDD drives (and don't state they are actual 5gb/second transfer rate SSDs), or HDD primary drives (especially SAS HDD drives presented as faster than SATA HDD drives as a marketing ploy, yet are still the older, inexpensive, and slower 3.0gb/second versions - which are significantly slower than 6gb/second transfer rate SATA drives, and yet still yield no better WEI scores than their old 3.0 gb/sec SATA counterparts anyway) that host your MS Windows Operating system.  Find a trading computer with an Extra Fast Primary Drive (6gb/sec transfer rates) to start, whether it is an SSD or HDD, and regardless of HDD RPM or Cache or SATA/SAS (an SSD being best).  If the storage drive is also 6gb/sec it can be used immediately as a backup primary drive to also house your Microsoft Operating System, in case your 'primary drive' happens to fail for some reason in the middle of a trading day...

5.  4GB of physical system RAM is weak, 8GB of physical system RAM is common, 16GB of physical system RAM is extensive, 24GB of RAM is Excellent, 32GB of physical system RAM is Extreme, 48GB of physical system RAM is Excessive, and 64GB of physical system RAM is extraordinary/unusual.

6.  Look for these aforementioned metrics in you trading computer in order to have a genuine 'power tradestation,' and to be genuinely competitive within the today's fast-moving financial markets day-trading environment!

And be extremely cautious of the simple used computer vendors that would also flood the Ebay price listings "search fields" with useless, old, and hardly different legacy office systems, in excessive and systematized 3 and 5 day listing rotations, to crowd out a traders discovery of genuine 'trading computer' providers and their more powerful and significantly better performance/cost system offerings!
