Large antique copper engraved map of the northern hemisphere, centered on Arctic region, by Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726). 

The map shows the northern part of America, with California as a peninsula, Europe, a large part of Africa, and Asia entire.



Size with margins : 60,5 x 50 cm / 23,6 x 19,6 inches

Condition : good condition, some foxmarks in the lower center, a very small missing in the lower margin, small renforts on back.

Edition : Amsterdam, by Jean Covens & Corneille Mortier, 1730, 18th Century.


Johannes Covens was a bookseller, publisher and printmaker. He worked in Amsterdam in association with Cornelis (or Corneille) Mortier. The collaboration between the two men began after the death of Pieter Mortier (1661-1711), son of a French political refugee. Pieter (Petrus) Mortier obtained in 1690 the privilege of distributing maps and atlases of French publishers in the Netherlands. His widow continued the business until his death in 1719. His son Cornelis took over the management of business under his father’s name for a few years. On 20 November 1721 Cornelis Mortier established a company with Johannes Covens. Covens had married Cornelis' sister in the same year. From that year the company was called by several names. During the next 140 years, the company experienced a huge expansion
