Very unusual copper engraved Map of Madagascar, with a small part of Mozambic (Africa), by Olfert DAPPER (1636-1689). 

In the title cartouche, the ancient name of Madagascar : St Laurent. This name has been done by the Portuguese who discovered the island the day of the St Laurent, on 1506, 2 February. They were the first European to discover the island. As we can see on the map, the interior of the island is not explored, only the coastlines are detailed. Pirates of all nations established themselves on the eastern coast and used the island as a base to remote from any European naval power. During this period, many small kingdoms began to flourish in the island through the slave trade. 

In the right side, the Reunion island, with its first name Santa Appolonia (because the island has been discovered by the Portuguese Tristan da Cunha, the day of the St Appoline, on 1507, 9 February, and the name Isle Bourbon (name given to island in 1649).

In the sea, some seamonsters and ships appears, which are going to buy slaves in Madagascar. 




Dapper was a Dutch physician and writer. He wrote books of history and geography. 

His famous book is "Description de l'Afrique", one of the most important work about Africa in 17th century.
