This is a wonderful War Charm from the,Manus Provence, Admiralty
Islands. War charms were worn at the back attached to a cord strung
about the neck, and charms endowed the wearer with strength and courage
during conflicts. The object was often a symbolic likeness of the first
warrior killed or severely wounded by its owner. Throughout the
Admiralty Islands, part of a warrior's preparation for battle included
donning a war charm to increase his courage and protect him in battle.
The charm was tied with a short cord to the nape of the neck so the
carved head looked out behind the warrior and the feathers curved away
from his back. War charms consists of a carved wooden head with a
headdress set above a plume of twenty-four black feathers representing a
body. The head has a long face with a long narrow nose, elongated
horizontal lens-shaped eyes, and a raised oval mouth, and is partly
painted in black and white. Today, similar War Charm ornaments are used
in dance performances at cultural festivals. This is NOT AN OLD
ORIGINAL WORN War Charm, but one that was made 30 years ago by a well
known carver from the Admiralty Islands. The War Charm is simply
beautiful and has all the characteristics of the old and rare charms.
This is a unique carved War Charm and would be a great addition to your
collection or home.
