REVIEW by Pointblnk -
Firstly, the artist lineup on this set is unbelievable. Secondly, nearly all the remixes are incredibly good. Thirdly, the new Acen material exceeded all my expectations. This is easily his best work since the early 90s.
Beginning with the 2092 Acen editions, classifying them as updates or remixes would be a disservice. These are new tracks with some respectful nods to the originals. Life & Crimes 2092 contrasts the rough with the smooth, replacing the original breakdown with a Moments In Love sample and a Bini & Martini vocal. It’s tough and beautifully dreamy at the same time. ‘Rings Around The Moon’ uses a Sting vocal to great effect over bubbling 303s and ascending synths. It’s fun to hear new samples used in such a carefree manner, rather than retreading old ground. Acen’s other updates are equally enjoyable. You can hear the playful fun in these tracks - they don’t take themselves too seriously, but are creatively ‘out there’ and perfectly blend new ideas with classic sounds.
Onto the remix artists. Pete Cannon throws the kitchen sink at Life & Crimes. It has that hectic cut-up Amiga mod-tracker vibe Brain & Slammin Vinyl pioneered. The amen is a barrage of lo-fi filth. It’s a bit like being hit over the head with an array of cooking utensils. And I mean that in a good way. NRG delivers a respectful remix of Trip 2, with some nifty edits to the Rolling Stones piano and fun new stab sections. Scott Brown does his jolly, bouncy mid 90s thing, which you’ll either love or hate, and Part 3 is the perfect choice for him to tackle if you like his sound. Another great choice is assigning Coco Bryce to the Obsessed remix. He tidies up the original nicely, which sounded a bit loose from a timing perspective to my ears. In contrast, dBridge produces one of the most boring remixes of Obsessed imaginable, which does little for me creatively. Can’t win them all, but that’s the diversity on offer here!
My favourite remix on the set is possibly Luna-C’s remix of Trip To The Moon. This is a genuinely beautiful reimaging of the track. The new breakdowns are spot on and capture the melancholy, mysterious vibe of the original. It’s quite restrained for a Luna-C track, and I think it's all the better for it. A bit of a shame it’s relegated to the limited edition vinyl and more vinyl junkies won’t get to enjoy it.
The bonus CD contains a barrage of remixes from up and coming artists. I particularly enjoyed the Mannik remix, which is completely mental and ravey. There’s something for everyone on this CD as the styles are relatively diverse.
