Before the war, the Moscow Bicycle Plant produced heavy motorcycles M-72, but the equipment for their production was evacuated to the city of Irbit. During the war years, motorcycles and bicycles were repaired at the plant, including those supplied by Lend-Lease. After the victory in the Great Patriotic War, the company had to master a motorcycle of the opposite class - a small light 125-cc model M1A. This first Soviet post-war motorcycle was manufactured using factory equipment removed from the DKW factory in the German city of Zschopau, and, therefore, it was structurally identical to the pre-war DKW-RT125 model. A similar model, which differed in electrical equipment, was simultaneously mastered in Kovrov under the brand name K-125.

It was an easy to manufacture and operate a small motorcycle. It required a relatively small amount of metal and rubber to make it. It was designed for repair and maintenance by a novice motorcyclist. The M1A was great for learning to drive. DOSAAF schools became one of the regular consumers. The design features include a three-speed gearbox and the absence of a rear wheel suspension.

In 1951, in connection with the conversion of the Moscow Motorcycle Plant, the production of M1A was transferred to Minsk to a bicycle plant built after the war. There, the M1A lasted on the assembly line until 1956 and was replaced by its own Minsk-based M1M development. The Minsk plant remained the main manufacturer of 125cm3 motorcycles in the country. He produced them for all the remaining decades of the twentieth century and continues to produce them to this day.
