The ripened form of the blackthorn fruit is known as sloe (berry).

What does Sloe Berry taste like?

They are a cousin of the cherry and they taste rather like damsons, to which they are also related. Sloes are extremely tart when they first ripen in October, but winter frosts mellow their taste to give them a rich almondy sourness.

How to use/consume Sloe Berries/Blackthorn Fruit?

Infusion Recipe:

2 tbsp. of dried sloe berry, lightly crushed, boil for 5 minutes in 500 g of water. After cooling, the strained infusion/decoction is taken 3 times a day for 150 ml before meals.

Tea Recipe :

Carefully bruise a few dry berries, steep in just off the boil water for 5 minutes, sweeten with honey to taste. Enjoy 1-2 cups daily as needed.

Gargle:

Blackthorn gargle is made by brewing an infusion of two to four grams of dried fruit. This is used to reduce mouth and throat inflammation.

Sloe Gin:

Put 500g of Sloe berries in a jar, add 1 liter of quality gin. DO NOT ADD SUGAR! Close the lid, give it a shake and leave it for at least 2-3 months, up to a year is ideal. Store in a cool, dry and preferably dark space.

(Almond, Cinnamon or Honey can be added bevor closing the lid, up to taste)
