Description

Fresh seeds of Hibiscus mutabilis (Cotton Rose / Confederate Rose mallow) – with full instructions for germination.

Hibiscus mutabilis, originally native to southern China and Taiwan, is a large, beautifully-flowered shrub, with attractive, palmately-lobed foliage, and renowned for the incredible colour changing effect of its spring to autumn blooms.

The flowers open pure white and gradually change colour through light-pink to a deep-pink or red, which can be as quickly as a single day within warm weather, but in cooler conditions the change takes around 3 days. Possibly the most unique feature is that the three distinct flower colours appear on the shrub at the same time, with each flower cycling through the colour change at a slightly different rate.

Within the Tropics, Hibiscus mutabilis trees can grow as tall as 12-15 ft in height, but within cooler climates they will stay smaller (5-6 ft in height), remaining bushier and flowering in more profusion. As the foliage is frost-tender, plants are usually over-wintered within a glasshouse — although the roots are more hardy to frosts (down to around -5°C) so outdoor plants cut down by hard frosts will tend to regenerate new spring growth each year.  A holder of the The RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), it is a worthy garden plant amongst planting schemes, or as a potted, specimen plant.
