  • Robert Wilkinson (1780-1825) commercial map maker and publisher. Primarily a compiler of information from other sources, better known as a printmaker and publisher of books. Acquired the printing plates of John Bowles, (one of the most active map-makers). In 1794, Wilkinson issued the first edition of a new world atlas, entitled “The General Atlas Being A Collection Of Maps Of The World And Quarters, The Principal Empires, Kingdoms &c. ...”. Renewed the atlas with a series of new maps in 1825 but died the same year,with his plates being acquired by William Darton.
