RANGERS ANNIVERSARY

The Royal Irish Rangers were formed on 1st July, 1968
from the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (27th and 108th), The Royal Ulster Rifles (83rd and 86th)
and The Royal Irish Fusiliers (Princess Victoria’s (87th and 89th).

The Regiment inherited the traditions, customs and renown of these three famous Regiments
whose achievements span an unbroken period from 1689. It is now the last Irish Infantry
Regiment of the Line in the British Army and therefore regards itself as the custodian of the
history of all gallant Irish Infantry Regiments now disbanded. 157 Battle Honours have been
awarded to the Regiment.

On its formation the Regiment consisted of three Regular Battalions, one Territorial Battalion
and the Regimental Depot. The 3rd Battalion was disbanded on 12th December, 1968 and the 5th
(Volunteer) Battalion was raised on 1st April 1971. The North Irish Militia (4th Battalion) was
formed on the 1st April, 1967, before the formation of the Royal Irish Rangers, from the
amalgamation of the Territorial Battalions of the three Regiments, together with the
1st Battalion The London Irish Rifles.
