Short Description of Holy Thistle (Cnicus Benedictus):
It got its latin name Cnicus Benedictus due to its ability to cure. This medicinal herb has been used for more than 2000 years for its medicinal uses. It received its Latin second name from the Benedictine monks who cultivated the plant in Medieval Europe. Blessed thistle is typically prepared as a tea using the tops, leaves, and upper stems. From 4 kg of fresh holy thistle about 1 kg of dry ones is obtained.
Blessed thistle (Cnicus Benedictus) should not be confused with its relative, milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Blessed thistle contains tannins, which are water-soluble polyphenols that help protect the body against oxidation and support healthy digestion; whereas, milk thistle contains silymarin, a popular ingredient in herbal supplements used to support liver health.

What does Holy Thistle herbal tea taste like?
Blessed thistle tea is described to have a rich and strong flavour, it's often used for flavouring dishes or even as a substitute for artichoke. This herb is often used as a cordial or infusion and tastes lovely brewed with some added sweetness to counterbalance its sharp flavour profile.

How to use/consume dried Blessed Holy Thistle?

Infusion/Tea Recipe 1: 
2 tablespoons of herb are brewed with 500 ml of water for 15 minutes. Strain and drink after cooling. The resulting infusion is used for the whole day,  drink three times a day before meals. 

Infusion/Tea Recipe 2:
1 - 3 tsp of dried blessed thistle herb in 1 cup boiling water for 5-15 min; 1 cup may be taken three times daily, recommended by some to be used 30 min before meals.

Infusion/Tea Recipe 3:
Blessed thistle tea can be made by steeping 1 to 3 teaspoons of the dried herb in one cup of hot water for 10 minutes. Add honey for a bit of sweetness.

Externally on skin:
With the infusion #1 you can make rinses or compresses for acne, wounds, minor cuts and to prevent skin infections. 

Tincture and Herbal Extracts:
Making of tinctures and herbal oral extracts is possible with this herb. 

Recommended daily dosage:
1 - 3 cups of tea/infusion per day.
Recommended < 5 g per day.
Do not take if you are allergic to ragweed!
Not safe for use during pregnancy!
Not recommended in infancy or early childhood!
Do NOT overdose and do NOT use excessive! 
People with heartburn and gastric ulcers should use it with caution because it increases stomach acid secretion.
