Homann's Maior Atlas was first published in 1716 by Johann Homann, the founder of the famous Nuremberg map publishing house. It quickly became the standard gentleman's library atlas around Europe, particularly in German-speaking areas. After Johann's death in 1724 his son ran the business until his death in 1730 and then the firm became Homann Heirs, a combination of family and other geographers who pursued the commercial atlas market with considerable success.

Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as "Homann Erben", "Homanniani Heredes", or "Heritiers de Homann" abroad.
