Erasmi Colloquia Selecta; or, the Select Colloquies of Erasmus. With and English Translation, As Literal As Possible. Designed for the Use of Beginners in the Latin Tongue. The Twenty-Second Edition, John Clarke, Printed by R. Raikes, Glocester, 1789, manuscript soft wrap covers, 6.5 x 4.25”, 18mo.

In good condition. Light wear to extremities with minors scuffing along edges. Homemade binding has been remarkably preserved and remains bright and relatively clean. Jute or hemp was used for the ties and remains in good shape. Original boards have been covered… uncertain of their state, but leather end band remains. Text says in repetition “Youth is the proper season for acquiring education” thirteen times and signed John Pepperday. Inside pastedowns say “Avoid Punishment” seven times and is dated Tuesday February 21st, 1826. Very unusual, very unique. Text itself is toned with light dog earring, a few ink smudge marks and a bit of underlining in quill. Binding remains tight. Please see photos.

Erasmus’ Colloquies once owned by a clearly rambunctious Latin school boy! Unique manuscript 1820’s homemade binding wraps this classic text with phrases of restraint and hopes of good morals. An object with a lot of human character remaining thanks to its unique wrapping.
