Very large physical wall map of French West Africa (Afrique occidentale française AOF) & French Equatorial Africa Afrique équatoriale française (AEF)

AEF (French Equatorial Africa) is the name given to the general government created in 1910 and regrouping in a federation the four French territories of equatorial Africa: Gabon, the Middle Congo (now Congo-Brazzaville), Oubangui-Chari (now Central African Republic) and Chad. In 1946, the status of these colonies was changed to that of French territories grouped in the French Union. After being placed under French mandate in 1919, then under trusteeship in 1945, Cameroon joined the states constituting French Equatorial Africa. This federation, whose capital was Brazzaville, gave way in 1958 to four states which were to obtain their independence.

AOF (French West Africa) differs from French equatorial Africa. The AOF corresponds to another colonial government created in 1895 and grouping in a federation the territories of Senegal, Mauritania, French Sudan (now Mali), Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), French Guinea, Niger, Côte-CôteIvory and Dahomey (now Benin). His capital was Dakar. In 1958, decolonization led to the breakup of the federation. The French Constitution of 1958 grouped all the French colonies and possessions under the name of French Community and each of them (with the exception of Guinea, which chose immediate independence) obtained its status as «Autonomous Republic».
