Up for grabs is the 5th overall issue for Electronic Gaming Monthly. This issue was released in December 1989.  Technically, the issue is titled as "The 1990 Video Game Buyer's Guide", and it doesn't mention Electronic Gaming Monthly on the cover. However, this was the 5th issue sent to subscribers. It was the December issue, and they wanted to make it the 1990 Video Game Buyer's Guide, instead of dedicating a separate issue for that purpose. Future Buyer's Guides would become separate, stand-alone issues. The coolest article in this magazine is a big breakdown on the hottest and newest gaming systems. They cover the Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16 and the Atari Lynx. There's also an interesting article in the beginning of the magazine talking about telephone call-in lines to get tips and tricks for various games. It's amazing that this was a real money-making industry back then. They took advantage of frustrated gamers by offering a chance to phone in and talk to a gaming pro on how to beat the latest Nintendo game tapes. (that's what Mom used to call them, back in those days!) Some of the more interesting reviews in the 5th issue included Bad Dudes, Twin Cobra and P.O.W. (Prisoners of War) for the NES. For the Sega Genesis, Ghouls & Ghosts, Thunder Force 2 and Tommy Lasorda Baseball were reviewed. Blazing Lazers, Legendary Axe and China Warrior were reviewed for the TurboGrafx-16. Tetris and Super Mario Land were reviewed for the Nintendo Gameboy. Captain Silver, Cloud Master and Spellcaster were reviewed for the Sega Master System.
