Robert Lowell was an American poet. He spent time in prison during World War II as a conscientious objector. During the 1960s, Lowell was the most well-known American poet, and was considered the best American poet of his generation. Following personal hardships, Lowell took a break from the strict forms of poetry he had focused on, and in the 1950s, began writing about the relationships in his life including those of his ex-wives, his children, and his struggles with mental health.
