- This fine rare 14K gold and sterling pipe cleaning tool and tamper date to c. 1890. It was made to slip easily into the pipe smoker's pocket. The case, tamper and hinged loop are 14K and the pipe bowl scraper and the pipe stem cleaner are sterling. The overall length of the piece (when closed) is 2 3/4". Its width is 1/2". Its thickness is 3/16" (at center). Its cumulative weight is 20.1 grams. The sides of the piece have elegant engraved parallel lines with one side having the monogram ECF within a rectangular cartouche. The piece is in very good condition with correct wear for a piece that is over 100 years old. All the gold parts test 14K and the two blades test sterling. It's marked 14K / STERLING and has a maker's hallmark "RB Co." for the W. and S. Blackinton Company of Meridan, Connecticut. This company was formed in 1865 by the Blackinton brothers who specialized in gold jewelry.
