In fair condition. Light wear to extremities with scuffing and modest soiling to surface of cloth. Spine spine and rebacked. Gilt finishing remains bright and clean. Water dampness staining to edges of rear board, afflicts rear pastedown. First four leaves have top right edge missing. “Charles J.O. Mackie with Compliments of The Author, New York, Oct. 5, 1886” on tip-in. Interior light toned with occasional brittle edges. A few small tears. Free of known markings. Binding intact. John Denison Champlin Jr. (1834-1915)  was a nonfiction writer and editor from the United States. As an editor, he worked in journalism and graphic arts. In 1884 he visited Europe, and accompanied Andrew Carnegie  in a trip by coach through southern England. He later became editor of Scribner’s art cyclopædias.
