C. Lloyd Morgan was a British ethologist and psychologist. He was known for his theory of emergent evolution, which is the theory that new properties, such as consciousness, emerge during the process of evolution. He also hypothesized that the higher mental capabilities of animals should be considered when the lower capabilities could not be used to understand the behavior of an animal. This would later become known as Morgan's Canon.
