Les timbres:
L’expert m’a aidé dans mon choix. Les 3 timbres sont donc proposés en même temps. Ils reviennent de l’expertise et le certificat d’origine (en français) sera joint à l’envoi.
Ces 3 timbres sont très certainement issus du même feuillet de 8 et sont tous différents : point noir près du bec de l’oiseau Tache rouge à gauche d’un cocotier. Espace entre la voile et le haut du mât à voir.
L’expertise confirme notre soupçon de double frappe. La valeur 5 a été frappée en jaune puis en rouge, présentant un léger décalage. Au moins 5 autres timbres sont dans la nature…
Histoire :
La couronne Britannique a pris possession de Christmas en 1888 (316 000 hectares), aujourd’hui île Kirimati. La possession a été proclamée suite aux pressions US d’en revendiquer la propriété depuis 1857. L’île a été louée à la Lever Brother’s pacific Plantations Ltd. Une grande plantation de cocotiers fut créée pour récupérer le coprah. En 1903 la location a été transferée à une compagnie Londonienne nommée Central Pacific Cocoanut Plantations. Il y avait à l’époque 750.000 cocotiers.
Mr Rougier :
Emmanuel Rougier né le 26-08-1864 en Auvergne fait sa théologie au Puy en Velay puis part en Angleterre chez les Maristes avant de devenir prêtre en 1888. De suite il embarque pour le compte de la Société de Marie à destination des Fidji avec Monseigneur Vidal, sur le navire Le Calédonien et atteint Suva, le terminus, le jour de ses 26 ans.
….Selon l’histoire, il aurait hérité d’une fortune de la part d’un bagnard Néo calédonien (Cecile ou Gustave-Athanase Cecille-Affair -1907-). C’était un missionnaire très actif mais très indépendant de sa hiérarchie avec laquelle il entrait souvent en conflit. Mr Rougier a été exclu de la société de Marie (Frères Maristes en 1909) et se spécialise dans les affaires allant semble t’il jusqu’à faire du trafic d’alcool pendant la prohibition américaine …
Il a acheté les îles Fanning et Washington qu’il revendra pour reprendre le bail sur l’ïle Christmas. Le 10 août 1912, il revend Fanning et Washington 70 000 livres et achète Christmas le 17 septembre 1913 pour le compte de sa société, la Pacific Cocoanut Plantation Ltd. (siège à Londres). Il obtient du gouvernement anglais une autorisation d’exploitation valable jusqu’en 2001 !!!
En 1919 le Royaume Uni a rattaché Christmas à Gilbert et Ellice sans pour autant ouvrir un bureau de postes.
Il achète une superbe goélette, la Ysabel May et fait imprimer des timbres.
C’est pour se rembourser des frais occasionnés par le transport du courrier que Rougier a émis ce timbre reproduisant son bâteau.
L’île de Christmas était de fait privée entre 1916 et 1938.
Il s’intéresse à l’ethnographie et fut un des premiers présidents de la Société des études océaniennes.
Mr Rougier, malade, confie en 1925 l’administration de l‘île Christmas à son neveu Paul-Emmanuel Rougier et a fini ses jours à Tahiti dans sa propriété de Taaone à Pirae sous le nom d’abbé Rougier !

The stamps:
Local Post stamps were used on the privately owned Christmas Island, from 1916 to 1938.
The expert helped me in my choice. The 3 stamps are therefore offered at the same time. They have just returned from the expertise and the certificate of origin (in French) will be attached to the shipment.
These 3 stamps are most certainly from the same sheet of 8 and are all different: black dot nera the beak of the bird - Red spot on the left of a coconut tree.- Space between the sail and the top of the mast to see.The expertise confirms our suspicion of a double strike. The value 5 was hit in yellow and then red, showing a slight shift.
At least 5 other stamps are in the wild…
Stamps from the country of the first (!) port of call were to complete the postage for onward transfer. The stamp depicting his schooner, the Isabel May had a face value of 5c in order to defray the cost of carrying mail from the island on his company ships. Issued in 1916, it’s 3 years before Christmas Island became part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. By 1926, the rate had increased to 10c and new stamps were issued in that value.
In 1939 the Gilbert and Ellice Islands finally opened a post office which sold colony stamps valid for international mail.
Story :
The British crown took possession of Christmas in 1888 (316,000 hectares), today Kirimati Island. Possession was proclaimed following US pressure to claim ownership since 1857. The island was leased to Lever Brother's Pacific Plantations Ltd. A large plantation of coconut palms was created to collect the copra. In 1903 the tenancy was transferred to a London company named Central Pacific Cocoanut Plantations. At the time, there were 750,000 coconut trees.
Mr Rougier - The man- His history:
Emmanuel Rougier born on 26-08-1864 in Auvergne did his theology at Puy en Velay then left for England with the Marists before becoming a priest in 1888. He immediately embarked on behalf of the Society of Mary bound for Fiji with Monsignor Vidal, on the ship Le Calédonien and reached Suva, the terminus, on his 26th birthday.….According to history, he inherited a fortune from an escaped French convict (deported in New Caledonian - Cecile or Gustave-Athanase Cecille-Affair -1907). He was a very active missionary but very independent of his hierarchy with which he often came into conflict. Mr Rougier was expelled from Society of Mary (Marist Brothers in 1909) and specialized in business going so far as to traffic alcohol during American prohibition...
He bought Fanning and Washington Islands which he will resell to take over the lease on Christmas Island. On August 10, 1912, he resold Fanning and Washington for 70,000 pounds and bought Christmas on September 17, 1913 on behalf of his company, the Pacific Cocoanut Plantation Ltd. (Headquarters in London). He obtained from the British government an operating license valid until 2001!!!In 1919 the United Kingdom attached Christmas to Gilbert and Ellice without opening a post office. He buys a superb schooner, the Ysabel May and has stamps printed. It is to reimburse the costs incurred by the transport of the mail that Rougier issued this stamp reproducing his boat.Christmas Island was de facto private between 1916 and 1938.
He is interested in ethnography and was one of the first presidents of the Society for Oceanic Studies. Mr Rougier, ill, in 1925 entrusted the administration of Christmas Island to his nephew Paul-Emmanuel Rougier and ended his days in Tahiti in his Taaone property in Pirae under the name of Abbé Rougier!
