Vintage Sophie Of Saks Fifth Avenue Black Dress Sequined Lace Belt M/L.

This dress is gorgeous! Heavy black lace overlay with sequins. The wide scoop neck is framed by a heavier sequined collar. The neckline has a velvet bow detail that snaps/hook & eye closes up under the collar. Elbow length sleeves trimmed in velvet. There are two delicate snapped straps on the inner front part of the collar, I am assuming the are to keep a slip in place.

The collar bow unfastens to allow access to the double zipper front. There is a waist length zipper that unzips to the waist, where there a hook & eye closure. Once that is unhooked, there is a second, slightly offset zipper that unzips to about the hip. The front zipper then can be unzipped all these to the hip.

The belt is velvet covered. The backing is separating and is cracked at the belt holes but still functional. The belt loops are intact.

There is no size tag, but it fits as a largish Medium/ smaller Large. Approximately 21” from pit to pit, 16” across the waist and 40” front point of shoulder to the hem.

The dress is not lined, so will need a slip should you choose to wear it for maximum comfort against the inner zippers.

This is a heavy, extremely well made dress, designed by Sophie Gimbel for Saks of Fifth Avenue. The style and tag date it to the 1950’s. It is clean and looks have no stains or repairs. It is in wearable condition, the seams and zippers are strong and in working order. The dress has been in storage and as such, has that “older home, older lady” type smell. I have made no attempt to clean the dress beyond letting it air.
