"Diana, World's Beloved Rose" Porcelain Doll by Titus Tomescu, Ashton-Drake Galleries num. 96002

In the course of her official royal duties as Princess of Wales, Diana traveled extensively throughout the world. As time went on, she graciously accepted the fact that she had become the center of attention at so many royal state functions.

The gown featured on this portrait of "Diana, World's Beloved Rose" is inspired by a formal gown that the Princess wore on a royal state visit to Saudi Arabia. In keeping with the traditional standards of modesty for women's dress in Muslim countries, the dress was specifically designed with a high jewel neckline and long sleeves. But it reflects Diana's sense of elegant style in it's brilliant color, and in the richness of the patterned, red-on-red beadwork on the gown's tunic bodice.

Years later, this dramatic gown was among those that the princess donated to be auctioned for charity... a sale that raised millions of dollars to benefit the causes she valued so highly.
