Historical reference

Sud Aviation Caravelle ("Caravelle") is a brand of French medium-range passenger turbojet aircraft produced by the National Industrial Aerospace Society (Societé Nationale Industrielle Aérospatiale) from 1955 (serially from 1958) until 1972.

Since 1946, leading French aviation firms have been working on the design of a jet transport aircraft. In 1951, a committee set up by the French government to support the development of civil aircraft with jet engines developed requirements for a short-haul jet passenger aircraft. The technical conditions provided for the creation of a medium-haul airliner for 55-65 passengers with a payload of 6000-7000 kg, a cruising speed of 620 km/h and a range of 2000 km. A national tender has been announced. The winner of the tender was waiting for a cash prize and a contract for the construction of two prototypes.

In January 1952, three firms submitted their projects to the competition. The Civil Aviation Committee chose SNCASE for further work, which proposed the X-210 project, but offered to rework the submitted project for two more powerful engines. The modified project with turbojet engines "Rolls-Royce RA-16 Avon" was presented to the committee in July 1952, and two months later the company received a notice of victory in the competition. The aircraft was named SE-210 Caravelle.

When designing the aircraft, SNCASE worked closely with the British firm de Havilland, who provided their developments for the first passenger jet aircraft "Comet-1". From the British aircraft, the forward fuselage with the cockpit and equipment was almost entirely taken. This collaboration not only reduced costs, but also reduced development time.

In January 1953, SNCASE received an order to build two prototypes for flight testing and two for strength and fatigue testing. The layout of the aircraft was demonstrated at the air show in Le Bourget. The first flight test prototype was rolled out of the factory hangar in April 1955.
