Initially, the body of each Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia was made entirely by hand, since the Karmann assembly plant in Osnabrück, Germany, had no stamping equipment, and the body elements had to be pounded out of tin and welded together, after which each joint was smoothed with lead-tin solder. As a result, the quality of the bodies was one of the best in the world, but they were much more expensive than the production ones - the Karmann-Ghia cost about one and a half times more than a standard Beetle. Later, as production expanded, more productive technologies were introduced, but the level of quality continued to be exceptional. Since the car was also exported to left-hand drive countries, there were right-hand drive versions.
The Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia was produced until 1974 in Germany and until 1975 in Brazil. The total production run of this inexpensive and stylish coupe was about 487,000 copies.
