Tu-104 (Tupolev-104) - the first Soviet jet-powered passenger aircraft, and the second in the world, after the British De Havilland Comet. In the first two years of its operation, from 1956 to 1958, the Tu-104 was the only operating jet passenger aircraft in the world due to the termination of De Havilland Comet flights in the summer of 1956 and until the introduction of the American Boeing 707 into commercial service in October 1958.
The official decree of the Council of Ministers on the design of a jet passenger aircraft at the Tupolev Design Bureau was issued on June 11, 1954, although work had been carried out earlier. Even during the creation of the Tu-16 bomber, the first sketches of the future jet passenger liner were created. By 1952-53, drawings were also prepared. The project received the working title Tu-2AM-3-200. The future airliner received an index of 104. By the way, all further serial passenger aircraft of the Tupolev Design Bureau received three-digit indices with a four at the end. The Tu-104 was designed on the basis of the previously produced long-range Tu-16 bomber. Its wings, tail, engine nacelles and landing gear were used. For the Tu-104, the fuselage diameter was increased and the wing was moved to the bottom of the fuselage. The Tu-16 - AM-3 engine has also been preserved. That is why the development of an aircraft of this type took such a short time.
The first flight of the Tu-104 was made on June 17, 1955 under the control of test pilot Yu. T. Alasheev. On November 5, the first production aircraft built at the Kharkov Aviation Plant (Ukrainian SSR) took off. In 1956, the Soviet Union managed to hit the Western world [source not specified 893 days], when during the visit of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU Nikita Khrushchev to London, three Tu-104s flew there (USSR-L5400, USSR-L5412, USSR-L5413). On September 15, 1956, the Tu-104 (USSR-L5415 board) made the first regular flight on the route Moscow - Omsk - Irkutsk.
