I-215 is an experienced fighter-interceptor with two engines created by OKB-21 under the leadership of S. M. Alekseev.
After the war, Semyon Alekseev, who worked in KB-21 Lavochkin, was appointed to Gorky as chief designer of the design bureau of serial plant No. 21. The Council of People's Commissars assigned him the task of developing a jet fighter with a more powerful engine than the captured German samples and their Soviet copies. The result of Alekseev's work was the I-21 fighter, which was planned for production in several versions.
The creation of the first two airframes was started at the end of 1946. The work was under strong pressure from the Ministry of Aviation Industry, which demanded that the first flight tests be completed by August 1, 1947, so that the aircraft could participate in the air show in Moscow Tushino on August 18. The first airframe was used exclusively for static testing. The second was completed and received the designation I-211 (I-21 version 1). Since the development of the TR-2 engine was delayed, the unfinished TR-1 engines developed under the guidance of designer A. M. Lyulka were installed on the aircraft. Despite pressure from above, the I-211 never made it to the air show in 1947.
