Description (Space and Aviation Firsts © 2017-2023).

Welcome Home Yank [Spitfire B-24] Anniversary CANVAS Limited Edition Print by William Phillips - RCAF No. 403 Sqn - USAAF 453rd Bomb Group

The 453rd Bombardment Group is identifiable by its capital letter “J” in the white circle on the B-24’s left tail fin.  The Spitfire letters registration insignia KH-Z identify the Spitfire as belonging to RAF/TRCAF 403 Squadron.

[Major] James “Jimmy” Stewart the famous actor was assigned to the 453rd Bombardment Group during his wartime service.

This classic aviation art illustrates the bond between the USAAF Bomb Groups and their “Little Friends”, as the B-24 is finally escorted to safety.  It is by one of the USA's most acclaimed aviation artists, is personally hand signed by William S. Phillips and comes with its own numbered Certificate of Authenticity [CoA].

Here are a few words by William S. Phillips about this magnificent art:

"A B-24 has lost one engine and streams smoke from another. She’s close to the White Cliffs of Dover but not out of trouble. Any second now, the last power may fail. Without enough altitude for a safe bail-out, her crew will brace for ditching and the English Channel is cold and choppy.

She’s got one thing going for her - a Spitfire Mark IXB of the 403 Squadron based at Kenley-Middlesex has come to meet her and weaves above. If her pilot chooses to ditch, the Spit pilot will tell Air-Sea Rescue.”

When William S Phillips did this painting, he liked it from the start. Old bomber pilots like it, too. Many recalled the exact situation, the irony of struggling out of enemy skies only to go down a few miles from the home base and the joy of seeing an RAF plane coming to ride herd.

Built as an interceptor, the Spitfire lacked range for escorting the bombers very far. But all agreed that the plane was a beauty and never more so than when it played Samaritan for its wounded allies.

There were only 150 of these stunningly beautiful Welcome Home Yank [Spitfire B-24] Anniversary CANVAS Limited Edition Print by William Phillips created for the Worldwide market!   Each captures all the vivid color and brilliance of the original William S. Phillips work of art and comes with its own numbered Certificate of Authenticity [CoA].

The ‘hall mark’ of a Master Aviation Artist is in their ability to show aircraft from different flight angles and in their different elements.  This ‘in-line’ forward looking view with the looming potential danger of the ‘White’ Cliffs of Dover, coupled with the menacing clouds and some meteorological ‘virga’, is simply amazing! The exceptional construct of this art is the artist putting you right into this moment as another participant in Welcome Home Yank, just asking if the B-24 will make it.

At 28"w x 21"h, this Welcome Home Yank [Spitfire B-24] Anniversary CANVAS Limited Edition Print by William Phillips - RCAF No. 403 Sqn - USAAF 453rd Bomb Group is stunning 'Landscape across your wall art', that outstandingly captures the 'drama' of a B-24 USAAF 453rd Bomb Group limping back to England with significant battle damage.

Mission Profile (source Wikipedia)

Pilot F/O William T Lane is a known pilot [perhaps the only pilot] of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX, KH- Z, 403 Squadron RCAF.  He is shown in Photo 4 in May 1943.

The Spitfire KH-Z is currently on display at the Manston Aviation Museum in the county of Kent, England.

No. 403 (Fighter) Squadron RCAF was formed at RAF Station Baginton (now Coventry Airport), Warwickshire, England, on 1 March 1941.

The first squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) formed overseas was identified by the letters KH, and initially equipped with the Curtiss Tomahawk 1, they were replaced with the Supermarine Spitfire after only 29 operational sorties. Through continual replacement and updating, the squadron flew various models, Mk I through Mk XVI, of this very popular aircraft.

It was flying a Mk IX Spitfire in 1943 that ace George ‘Screwball’ Beurling scored his 30th air victory while flying with the squadron.

The squadron served in RAF Fighter Command and Second Tactical Air Force for over four years.

By May 1945, the squadron had a record of 123 enemy aircraft destroyed, with a share in seven more, 10 probably destroyed, and 72 damaged with a share in one more.

The "Wolf" Squadron and many other units paid a high price in lives and aircraft. Eighty-five aircraft were destroyed. 76 pilots were reported missing; of these, four were killed, 39 presumed dead, 21 captured and nine successfully evaded capture.

The 453rd Bombardment Group

During World War II, the 453rd Bombardment Group was an Eighth Air Force B-24 Liberator heavy bombardment group stationed in England at RAF Old Buckenham in East Anglia, December 1943 - January 1944. The group was assigned to the 2nd Combat Bombardment Wing, and the group tail code was a "Circle-J".

The 453rd BG entered combat on 5 February 1944. Throughout combat, the unit served chiefly as a strategic bombardment group, targets such as fuel depots, marshalling yards, aircraft assembly plants, oil refineries, chemical works and airfields.  Besides ‘strategic’ operations the group engaged in support and interdictory missions, bombing V-weapon sites, airfields, and gun batteries in France prior to D-Day June 1944. In July 1944 they bombed German communications during the Battle of the Bulge, and dropped ammunition, food, and medical supplies near Wesel during the airbourne assault across the Rhine in March 1945.

James "Jimmy" Stewart the Hollywood movie star, was Group Operations Officer at Old Buckenham during the spring of 1944. The actor Walter Matthau also served in the group as a radioman-gunner.

The 453rd Bomb Group flew its last combat mission in April 1945.

In February 2015, it was announced that Old Buckenham Airport the modern civilian name for RAF Old Buckenham has applied for permission to build a museum dedicated to the 453rd at their former base in England. The plans are to house items described as having the potential to be the largest collection of 453rd Bomb Group memorabilia in existence.

Collectors Hints (Space and Aviation Firsts © 2017-2023).

Collectors Hint 1 – What is a Fine Artwork Canvas?

Limited Edition Canvas is often much 'more restricted' in their availability Worldwide.

Fine Artwork Canvas is intended to reproduce the presentation of the original oil or acrylic painting on stretched canvas.  This is absolutely the option of choice if you have the desire and preference to mirror the original painting in 3D presentation with texture and look.

If you have the desire and preference to mirror the original painting in presentation and texture similar to the painting this is absolutely the option of choice.

They are stunningly beautiful in their presentation and are often larger in Size for that ‘Stand Out Impressiveness’ upon your Wall.

Collectors Hint 2 - What is a 'Giclee' Limited Edition Print?

A Limited Edition Print uses the Giclee printing technique for very high quality.

The Term: The term "Giclee print" connotes an elevation in printmaking technology, which is exactly what it is.

Images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The Giclee printing process provides better colour accuracy than other means of reproduction. Archival quality ensures that the prints are light-fast and non-water soluble.

The Quality: The quality of the "Giclee print" rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatine printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.

Collectors’ Hint 3 - William S. Phillips

Phillips grew up loving art but never thought he could make it his livelihood. At college he majored in criminology and had been accepted into law school when four of his paintings were sold at an airport restaurant. That was all the incentive he needed to begin his work as a fine art painter. Bill Phillips is now a renowned aviation artist after one of his paintings was presented to King Hussein of Jordan, Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordanian Air Force. He developed sixteen major paintings, many of which now hang in the Royal Jordanian Air Force Museum in Amman.

The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum presented a one-man show of Phillips’ work in 1986. He is one of only a few artists to have been so honored. In 1988, Phillips was chosen to be a U.S. Navy combat artist. For his outstanding work, the artist was awarded the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association Americanism Medal.

At the prestigious annual fund raiser for the National Park Service, Bill’s work has been included in the Top 100 each year he has entered the competition and his work has won the Art History Award twice. Phillips was selected as the Fall 2004 Artist in Residence at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and tapped by the U.S. Postal Service to paint the stamp illustrations and header design for a pane of twenty stamps in 1997 entitled Classic American Aircraft. He was chosen again in 2005 for a pane of twenty stamps (ten designs) entitled American Advances in Aviation. Bill’s major collection of aviation art, Into the Sunlit Splendor, was published by The Greenwich Workshop Press in 2005.
